Aquafitness is performed in a swimming pool. The equipment is adjustable to inclined pool floors and to participants’ heights depending on various water depths. The best water depth for aquafitness equipment is 110 – 150 cm. The water temperature should ideally be about 26 to 32 degrees C.
Aquafitness is performed in a vertical position in shallow and/or deep water. No swim experience is required. Typically, exercise is done with the body immersed to the waist or to the chest, according to each one’s preference. It includes exercises on specially designed fitness machines like aquabikes, aquatreadmills and aquaellipticals as well as aquagym exercises performed with noodles and aquagloves.
Aquabikes and other equipment are made of electrolytically polished stainless steel so that they don’t rust in the water. They weight between 15 to 20kg like a full suitcase. The wheels at the front of the aquabike make it easy to move around. Once adjusted at the side of the pool and then lowered into the pool by the saddle and handlebars, the aquabike then slowly sinks to the bottom and then you can start. Adjust the saddle and handlebars to your height, jump on, and off you go. What sounds very simple really is very simple. The training session can start straight away.
A session lasts between 45 to 60 minutes and includes several phases: warm-up, development, cool-down and stretching. The core exercise will be done through various body positions and speeds on the aquabike.
Most sessions are done in group accompanied by music. The music together with the fact that you are exercising with others will improve your motivation. Alone with the trainer, the training is probably more intense. The exercise is very diversified and alternates quickly so that the session will pass quickly.
There are numerous applications to appeal to a wide variety of participants. If you also involve your arms you can strengthen your abs, your back and upper body at the same time
Each individual can decide the intensity for himself or herself. The more you push in the water, the more the water resists back. Some aquabikes are also equipped with an additional system that adjusts the level of resistance to your own liking.
